Organic Chaga Chicory

compostable-tea-packaging-1.jpg

Famous in New Orleans, roasted chicory root is often blended with coffee to create the ubiquitous Louisiana beverage. However, instead of combining it with coffee, we’ve decided to blend organic chicory root with organic chaga to create a caffeine-free herbal tea that is a great alternative to coffee and offers all the health properties of the chicory root and Arctic chaga mushroom. Not only does this blend look like ground coffee, it brews up a thick, rich cup that has the same dark brown liquor and a similar flavor. Excellent with milk and a touch of honey, this organic herbal tea can be prepared in a standard coffee maker, french press, or as a loose leaf tea. It also makes a great iced beverage!

The chaga-chicory combination not only tastes great, but creates a healthful 1-2 punch! Chicory is quickly gaining attention for its prebiotic health benefits. Prebiotics are a helpful companion to the more well-known probiotic. Chaga is an Arctic mushroom that has been used in folk medicine to alleviate gastrointestinal ailments and to boost immunity. It is also known as an adaptogen which is believed to help lower stress levels. The organic chaga used in our blend is sourced from the Finnish lapland forests where chaga has been wild-harvested for centuries to make “mushroom tea.”

Ingredients: organic roasted chicory root, organic chaga mushroom extract

What are Blended Teas?

Our delicious blended teas use the same top-quality organic teas and/or botanicals offered in our single origin varieties, but are comprised of teas, herbs, fruit, and/or flowers of multiple origins and/or varieties. When blending our teas, our goal is to create a cup with a specific flavor profile in mind. Unlike single origin teas, which can vary from harvest to harvest (just like wine!), blended teas trade seasonal variation for year-to-year consistency. As a result, the formula and/or appearance of our blends may change over time, but you can rest assured that you’ll always receive an organic cup of tea with consistent flavor.

Steeping Instructions

chagachicory-steeping-instructions.jpg

At Arbor Teas, we believe tea should be brewed to suit your personal taste. We’re happy to make recommendations to get you started, but don’t hesitate to experiment! When brewing your tea, your main considerations are tea quantity, water temperature, and steeping time. We recommend herbal and rooibos teas to be steeped for 5 to 7 minutes in water heated to a full rolling boil. For the best flavor, use fresh water whenever possible, and avoid overboiling. If you want a stronger brew, just use more tea. And don’t forget to re-steep your tea leaves to get the most out of your leaf!

Staff Perspectives

  • Marina

"This is my comfort tea of choice. I anticipate brewing this tea when I'm on my way home on a cold day. On a hot day I like to dress it up with a touch of honey & milk. On ice, a graham cracker flavor in the tea is enhanced!"

  • Sarah

"Sometimes you want the taste of coffee, but not the crazy rush and energy dive. This fits the bill! Smooth and tasty!"

  • Aubrey

"Chaga increases the body of this brew and adds a nice earthiness that compliments the more prominent chicory root. I call it Chaga-licious! :)"

Health Benefits

Chicory Root
Probiotics have received a lot of media attention and scientific inquiry about their benefits to the digestive system. But less attention is given to prebiotics. Chicory has some of the highest levels of prebiotics, which can also be extremely beneficial. Chicory gets its high prebiotic makeup from a soluble dietary fiber called inulin (not to be confused with insulin), which is also found in jicama and Jerusalem artichokes. Prebiotics can promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms in our gut, which act as food for probiotics. This means that prebiotics and probiotics work together, and prebiotics can make probiotics more effective!

Chaga Mushroom
Chaga is a fungi (Inonotus obliquus) that is most often found growing on Birch trees in the wild. It has been used in folk medicine as a medicinal mushroom for centuries in Northern Europe, Russia, China, and Japan to alleviate gastrointestinal ailments and boost immunity. It is also known as an adaptogen which naturopaths believe can help lower stress levels. Chaga contains antioxidants and is considered an immune system modulator. The potential therapeutic effects of Chaga in anticancer activity and suppression of autoimmune diseases has been associated with its polyphenol content and immunomodulating polysaccharides and betulinic acid.

Hands down, the best coffee replacement

Posted by Rachael Kras on 3rd Sep 2023

I have tried other chicory brands and it's always too bitter and strong and makes me feel like I wasted my money. This tea is ***outstanding*** as a coffee replacement. I can no longer drink coffee and even the caffeine in my light green tea was starting to bother me as well. This is like a light roast coffee. Very mild, smooth, zero bitterness with a nice neutral flavor that wont make me get tired of it. Works wonderfully with a cream and/or sugar. No stomach upset. I feel like it might even be helping my digestive system. It brews very dark and rich. I'm a big fan. I love having this as a caffeine free option but still feel like I have a fulfilling, hot beverage in the morning. It's a bonus that both ingredients are organic!

    Coffee Replacement

Posted by JUDITH MEINHARDT on 24th Jan 2023

This is by far the best coffee alternative I have tried. It has 'body' and a pleasant deep roasted flavor but doesn't taste burnt like similar products I've tried. Highly recommend trying this out! I also liked having the option to buy as a small sample first.

Organic Chaga Chicory--What a treat and no caffeine!

Posted by Virginia Lang on 9th Jun 2022

When I drink coffee, it is black and medium roasted pour over Columbian. Simple. This Organic Chaga Chicory was good by itself. If I added sweetner, it was a bit too sweet for me. But then for fun I added some Turkey Hill Vanilla Salted Caramel Ice Cream. It was like an Italian cappuccino. Memories of Italy come to mind. Totally hooked on this one and I highly recommend this for a no caffeine treat. Still a treat even without the ice cream.

    My weekend treat

Posted by Susan Gilmore on 25th Sep 2021

I was hesitant to try this. I added heavy cream to the cup. It is delicious. So I ordered the large bag. I quit coffee, drink green tea and rooibios tea. Now this! Yum!

    Best substitute for coffee

Posted by Emily B. on 4th Jun 2021

Tried a sample of this on a whim and it immediately became my favorite afternoon drink! Earthy, full-bodied and a little sweet -- great straight up but as others have said, with honey and a little milk it's extra good. Will be keeping this stocked on my "tea shelf" for as long as Arbor Teas carries it (hopefully forever!).

    Chaga chickory

Posted by Dhall on 9th Mar 2021

This is such a lovely and rich tea. When I make it into a latte with oat milk, it tastes like dark caramel or toffee. The color is also rich and dark and beautiful. This is my new favorite!

    100% Coffee Replacement

Posted by Callie Macaluso on 11th Feb 2021

As someone who is caffeine sensitive and misses the mouthfeel and cosiness of coffee on the regular, this has become my go-to get that sensation with all the taste, richness, and color I miss. Makes excellent lattes and pairs especially well with a little maple syrup for sweetener.

    Chaga Chicory

Posted by Billie Eversole on 17th Nov 2020

I recently ordered a sample of this one as well as several others. I love this! I can not have coffee anymore due to health issues and it is truly a perfect replacement, I can not say enough about it. That says a lot as I am really picky about my tea. I have come back to order a bigger bag now!

    Great coffee replacement

Really does have a coffee like flavor and makes a great latte. It's also delicious brewed with some cacao powder to add a chocolatey element.

This is my perfect bedtime sip. Like enjoying a coffee at twilight, except soothing, no caffeine and easy on my stomach.

    Husband's Fav

Posted by Abbey on 27th Jan 2019

I am not a fan personally, although I enjoy the earthy aroma. My husband would give it 5 stars. He uses it as a coffee alternative. Use an infuser that has a very fine mesh, the tea is finely ground like coffee.

    Chaga Chicory

Posted by A. Lauren on 29th Dec 2018

I ordered the sample size because I wasn't sure what to expect and whether it really would taste like coffee. To my surprise it does really taste similar to coffee. It isn't as bitter as coffee and has more of an earthy, herbal taste to it, but it is reminiscent enough of coffee that it satisfies the coffee craving. I had it with a little bit of unsweetened coconut milk in it and biscotti on the side. I'm reducing caffeine for health reasons so I will definitely order a larger size to have around. I found half a teaspoon was sufficient for brewing but the recommended teaspoon may produce a stronger cup.
